Powerful and engrossing

MARY VERNON

GHOST CHILD
By Caroline Overington
Random House $32.99

OVERINGTON is the person the term 'superwoman' was invented for - - award winning journalist, mother of twins, author and now a brilliant first novel. How does she manage it? Her years as an investigative reporter, she said, frustrated her with its limitations on what she could write about the problem of child abuse. So she resolved to write a novel so she could examine all aspects in depth. But this is no weepy, victim-driven piece of tosh. Told in flashback after 30 years, it traces the story of  the death of a child, and the consequences of that death on all involved with him. It's powerful and engrossing and will keep you guessing right until the end.

In a word: Brilliant

Caroline was raised in Melton, on the outskirts of Melbourne. She attended this school: Melton South Primary.
